A wide angle lens is often useful as the buildings are so tall and there is little room for stepping back and capture them. Also panoramas are great, and a good spot to get a panorama is the top of the Rock at Rockfeller Center rather than the obvious Empire State Building. Top of the Rock allows you to actually see the Empire, and, as a bonus, you will skip the long lines. For skyline shots, go either to Hoboken or Jersey City for sunrise views or Dumbo, Long Island City at sunset. The bridges also look amazing from that point of view at night.

The Memory Foundations design by Daniel Libeskind was chosen as the master plan for the World Trade Center site. The plan included the 1,776 feet (541 m) Freedom Tower (now known as One World Trade Center, which is at 80 stories with glass up to the 54th floor in July 2011) as well as a memorial and a number of other office towers. Out of the World Trade Center Site Memorial Competition, a design by Michael Arad and Peter Walker entitled Reflecting Absence was selected in January 2004.

El nuevo Wold Trade Center será uno de los proyectos arquitectónicos más avanzados del mundo. La llamada Freedom Tower, renombrada oficialmente como One World Trade Center, está siendo construida y en junio de 2011 iba por el piso 54. El edificio principal del complejo, la One World Trade Center, tendrá 541 metros de altura (124 metros más que las Torres Gemelas), y tendrá 108 plantas.

También se prevé que, en 2015, será construida una otra torre (la sexta del complejo WTC), bautizada como "130 Liberty Street".

Woolworth Building | The Cathedral of Commerce

The Woolworth Building aka Cathedral of Commerce, is one of the most beautiful building in New York City, with 57 stories and 792 feet, was the tallest until the construction of 40 Wall Street and Chrysler building in 1930.

Build by Frank Woolworth owner and founder of The Woolworth Company (Foot Locker), he paid $13,5 million.

Designed in neo-gothic style by the architect Cass Gilbert with splendor and resemblance of european gothic cathedrals, using pinnacles, domes and gargolyes. Also designed The Supreme Court in Washington D.C..

The Woolworth Building was featured in the showdown of Walt Disney Pictures' 2007 film Enchanted, and featured in the 1999 thriller film The Bone Collector.

El Edificio Woolworth, también conocido como la catedral del comercio,  es uno de los más bellos edificios de Nueva York y fué el rascacielos más alto hasta 1930 con 241 metros (57 plantas), después de las construcciones del 40 Wall Street y sobre todo el Chrysler.

Fué construido por el financiero Frank Woolworth con un coste de 13,5 millones de dólares, fundador de Woolworth Company, lo que actualmente es Foot Locker.

Diseñado por Cass Gilbert (que también diseño el edificio de la Corte Suprema de Washington), el edificio se asemeja a una catedral gótica con pináculos, bóvedas y gárgolas.

Como anécdota podemos ver el edificio en la película Enchanted (Encantada - Disney 2007) en la escena en la Reina Narissa, tras convertirse en dragón comienza una batalla en la parte superior del edificio. También puede verse en la película El Coleccionista de Huesos (1999).

The Twin Towers have made it to the big screen more than a few times, and now Dan Meth has compiled a reel of all of its cameos between 1969 and 2000. From King Kong to The Wiz, to Ghostbusters II, to Superman and of course Manhattan, he did a pretty thorough job.

Movie: The Lost Weekend 
Don Birnam (Ray Milland), a would-be writer, is a long time alcoholic who is dissatisfied with his life. His brother Wick (Phillip Terry) and girlfriend Helen St. James (Jane Wyman) manage to keep him sober for 10 days, but he arranges to get away from them and goes on a self-destructive three-day binge.

Movie: State of Grace 
Terry Noonan (Sean Penn) returns to New York's Hell's Kitchen after twelve years to find that his old neighborhood of seedy bars and Irish-American mobsters has been taken over by Yuppies hell-bent on gentrification. Terry's childhood buddies, ruthless gang leader Frankie Flannery (Ed Harris) and his psychotic brother Jackie (Gary Oldman), are determined to keep the neighborhood's tradition of organized -- and extremely violent -- crime alive. Terry joins Frankie's gang and gets back together with his former love, Frankie's sister Kathleen (Robin Wright). But as the cops crack down on the Flannery crime ring, it becomes clear that Terry's loyalties are dangerously divided.

Movie: The Fisher King
Terry Gilliam directed this adaptation of Richard LaGravenese's mystical (and mythical) tale of redemption in the hard-time town of New York City. Jeff Bridges is shock radio DJ Jack Lucas, whose low opinion of humanity lends itself well to his radio talk show, where the enmity rubs off on his listeners. One fan in particular takes Jack's rants to heart and goes to a fancy restaurant with a gun, murdering innocent diners. Jack is so distraught at what his on-air suggestion wrought that he sinks into a three-year depression, drinking himself to sleep and mooching off of his girlfriend Anne Napolitano (Mercedes Ruehl, in an Oscar-winning performance), an attractive owner of a video store. Hitting bottom, Jack slumps to the river, prepared to commit suicide. To his rescue comes a crazed but witty homeless man named Parry (Robin Williams), who tells Jack he's destined for great things -- all his has to do is find the Holy Grail (conveniently located in mid-town Manhattan) and save Parry's soul. He also wants Jack to help him out with the woman of his dreams, Lydia Sinclair (Amanda Plummer), a shy type who works at a publishing company. Parry was once a university professor became unglued by a tragic event in his past; Jack soon realizes that to save himself, he first must save Parry.

At the New York City High School for the Performing Arts, students get specialized training that often leads to success as actors, singers, etc. This movie follows four students from the time when they audition to get into the school, through graduation. They are the brazen Coco Hernandez, shy Doris Finsecker, sensitive gay Montgomery MacNeil, and brash, abrasive Raul Garcia.


Dakota Apartment Building 
Movie: Rosemary's Baby
Actor Guy Woodhouse and his wife Rosemary move into a new apartment. In no time they befriend their neighbours, the aging Castevets. Rosemary soon becomes pregnant. But when her obstetrician prescribes herbal medicines, which the Castevets provide, Rosemary becomes increasingly sicker. She becomes suspicious of the strange coincidences that start to occur around her and comes to believe that the Castevets, her obstetrician and even Guy are a conspiring coven of Satanists and that the child she is carrying may have been fathered by the Devil.

In summertime in Manhattan, the plain and average Richard Sherman (Tom Ewell) sends his wife and son for vacation in the country. When a beautiful and sexy blonde (Marilyn Monroe) lodges the upstairs apartment of his small building, Sherman first opens the front door for her and then he invites her to have a drink with him after the fall of her tomato vase on his chair...

Movie: Manhattan Murder Mistery
Carol Lipton (Diane Keaton) suspects that her aged neighbour Paul House (Jerry Adler) has murdered his wife, found dead seemingly due to a heart attack. Her husband Larry (Woody Allen), thinks she’s paranoid and tries to get the idea out of her head; but Carol is determined to find out more about her neighbour and decides to follow him with the help of Ted (Alan Alda), a friend of the couple who’s always fancied her.

Movie: Smoke (Wayne Wang)
In 1990, novelist Paul Auster was asked to contribute a Christmas story to the New York Times. The resulting piece, "Auggie Wren’s Christmas Story," forms the basis for his screenplay for SMOKE. Directed by Wayne Wang and set in a Brooklyn cigar store, Auster expanded the story to include four other characters whose lives intertwine with Auggie Wren’s. As Auggie, the manager of the store that serves as a neighborhood meeting place, Harvey Keitel gives a restrained, mellow performance. The other characters, Paul (William Hurt), a blocked writer; Rashid (Harold Perrineau Jr.), a troubled youth; Ruby (Stockard Channing), Auggie’s former lover; and Cyrus (Forest Whitaker), Rashid’s long-lost father, form a web of relationships over a few summer days. Auster, who had previously adapted his novel THE MUSIC OF CHANCE into a taut script, here exhibits a loose, almost improvisational style as he lets his characters simply talk about their lives. Wang eschews the big, somewhat melodramatic style he used in THE JOY LUCK CLUB for relaxed, natural direction that allows the actors, who are all terrific, to project an everyday realism seldom seen in American movies. The actual Christmas story appears at the end in a beautiful black-and-white montage, accompanied by a bittersweet Tom Waits song.


USS Intrepid 
Movie: I Am Legend 
Year 2012. Robert Neville is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable...and manmade. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City...and maybe the world. But he is not alone. He is surrounded by "the infected"--victims of the plague who have mutated into carnivorous beings that can only exist in the dark and that will devour or infect anyone or anything in their path. For three years, Neville has spent his days scavenging for food and supplies and faithfully sending out radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. All the while, the infected lurk in the shadows, watching Neville's every move, waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Perhaps mankind's last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But his blood is also what the infected hunt, and Neville knows he is outnumbered and quickly running out of time.

Chronicles the origins of Superman - rocketed from the dying planet Krypton by his scientist father Jor-El, Kal-El arrives on Earth and is taken in by the Kents. After his adopted father dies, Kal-El (named Clark) discovers his origins and takes on the role of Superman. Travelling to Metropolis, Superman meets love interest Lois Lane and soon finds himself struggling against Lex Luthor, a criminal genius who plans to drop the California coastline into the Pacific Ocean using a nuclear missile and cash in on the desert (now beachfront) real estate property he has bought up.

Mad Men Restaurants: 10 Places Don Draper Dined in New York

Restaurant: AJ Maxwell’s (aka The Forum of the Twelve Caesars)

Location: 57 West 48th Street, New York, New York

Episode: “The Suitcase,” season 4, episode 7

The Dish: I’m fudging here a bit as AJ Maxwell’s wasn’t exactly featured on Mad Men — but its location was. In this will-she-stay-or-will-she-go Peggy Olsen-centric ep, the devoted-to-Don-Draper working girl misses her big birthday dinner at The Forum of the Twelve Caesars, much to the great chagrin of her family and boring beau Mark. Steakhouse AJ Maxwell’s opened in the same space as the opulent The Forum of the Twelve Caesars, which closed in 1975, but some of The Forum’s over-the-top charms remain.

Insider’s Tip: Order the classic Caesar salad and look around for The Forum’s original murals in the restaurant.

Restaurant: Barbetta

Location: 321 West 46th Street, New York, New York

Episode: “The Summer Man,” season 4, episode 8

The Dish: This theater-district Italian restaurant holds several distinctions outside of its Mad Menappearance. It is the oldest restaurant in New York that is still owned by the family that founded it, the oldest Italian restaurant in New York, and the oldest restaurant in New York’s Theater District. On top of all that, a newly single Don Draper squires the sassy Bethany toBarbetta, only to run into Betty Draper and new father husband Henry Francis in “The Summer Man.”

Insider’s Tip: Don’t miss dining in one of the city’s best gardens.

Restaurant: Benihana

Location: 47 West 56th Street, New York, New York

Episode: “The Chrysanthemum and the Sword,” season 4, episode 5

The Dish: Don Draper kicks off his short-lived romance with Bethany at Benihana’s flagship Manhattan location in this episode. There to research Japanese culture (Because restaurants have better booze than libraries?), Don’s supper isn’t nearly as memorable asBethany’s scene-stealing black dress.

Insider’s tip: Skip the sushi and head straight for the show that is the teppanyaki that made restaurateur Rocky Aoki famous.

Restaurant: The Four Seasons

Location: 99 East 52nd Street, New York, New York

Episode: “The Ladies Room,” season 1, episode 2

The Dish: This ironically titled episode takes place at Toots Shor’s long-shuttered, eponymous restaurant(ironic, because, apparently, Toots wasn’t the biggest fan of his female patrons). Betty Draper is impressed with the place – and Roger Sterling’s generosity. Don says of Sterling, “Toots Shor means he likes me. When he gets us to The Four Seasons, then we’ll know he trusts me.” A longtime power spot for lunch anddinner, The Four Seasons and its cool mid-century-yet-current vibe will transport you straight back to the days of Sterling Cooper. Plus, the food’s way better than Shor’s. Sorry, Toots!

Insider’s tip: If you’re power lunching, book a table in the Grill Room. (A lunchtime seat in the Pool Room prompted LA agent Michael Ovitz to “threaten” co-owner Julian Niccolini with legal action.)

Restaurant: Grand Central Oyster Bar

Location: 89 East 42nd Street at Grand Central Terminal, New York, New York

Episode: “Red in the Face,” season 1, episode 7

The Dish: In this instant-classic, first-season episode, Don and Roger engage in a marathon session of oysters and Martinis [Ed note: Something tells me I could shame both of them.] at what is inferred to be the Grand Central Oyster Bar. A commuter and city-dweller institution since 1913, this feather in Grand Central’s dining cap carries 16 or 17 varieties of oysters every day.

Insider’s tip: Order the pan-roasted oysters. And, don’t take the stairs afterward.

Restaurant: Keens Steakhouse

Location: 72 West 36th Street, New York, New York

Episode: “The Arrangements,” season 3, episode 4

The Dish: Still serving up some of Manhattan’s tastiest steaks,Keens Steakhousedates way back to 1885. The restaurant got its close up in third-season stunner “The Arrangements,” in which Don, sneaky Pete Campbell, and Pete’s deep-pocketed, prep-school pal Ho-Ho talk Jai Alai over highballs. 

Insider tip: Don’t miss out on the mutton chops. No, really.

Restaurant: La Grenouille

Location: 3 East 52nd Street, New York, New York

Episode: “Guy Walks into an Advertising Agency,” season 3, episode 6

The Dish: Known for its sublime service and stunning floral arrangements, La Grenouille opens its doors on December 19th, 1962, just as Don Draper is ascending to new heights in his career as an ad man. When visiting brass from Puttnam, Powell, and Lowe come to Manhattan, they’re able to score a reservation at La Grenouille, courtesy of woman-behind-the-mad-men Joan Holloway.

Insider tip: Leave your cell phone – and your kids under 12 — at home. Befitting a restaurant that opened during the Mad Men era, neither are welcome.

Restaurant: The Oak Room Bar

Location: 10 Central Park South at 59th Street, New York, New York

Episode: “Red in the Face,” season 1, episode 7

The Dish: Don learns the extent of boss Roger Sterling’s marital discord over drinks at the legendary Oak Room Bar in the fabled Plaza Hotel in this premiere-season episode. Recently refurbished, the stunning views of Central Park, the original murals by Everett Shinn, and the original oak bar remain intact, as does the classic New York feel.

Insider’s tip: Don’t wave off the bountiful bread basket before you try it. Carbs be damned!

Restaurant: P.J. Clarke’s

Location: 205 East 55th Street, New York, New York

Episode: “The Hobo Code,” season 1, episode 8

The Dish: Peggy Olsen lets sorta loose when she hits P.J. Clarke’swith the cool and not-so-cool (read: Pete!) kids at Sterling Cooper in “The Hobo Code” from season 1. Pete sneers at Peggy’s beer-fueled behavior and bravado, which spoils the evening. In real life, that’s impossible! Operating since 1884, busy-all-the-time P.J. Clarke’sisa famous Manhattan real-estate hold-out success story — and always a fun time for everyone.

Guggenheim Museum: The $100.000 Room

This artist won a biennial modern art, the prize was $100.000 and also got the opportunity to exhibit at the Guggenheim Museum, so the artist created this room, using the money he made ​​earlier. The Spotted Pig | The Gastropub Revolution

[EN] The Spotted Pig is New York’s first gastropub, opened in February of 2004, runned by  April Bloomfield and her business partner, Ken Friedman. In 2005 the first-ever Michelin Guide to New York awarded the Spotted Pig one star.

One burger is house specialty, which the restaurant’s chef, April Bloomfield, serves one way: char-grilled, on a brioche bun, topped with crumbled Roquefort. Only Lou Reed, a fixture in the neighborhood, is allowed to have his burger with onions (because a server mistakenly heeded his request when Bloomfield wasn’t there). Mayonnaise is forbidden.

The Spotted Pig is a place where normal people go to feel like celebrities and celebrities go to feel like normal people. Sometimes they want to be cool. Sometimes they want a really good cheeseburger.

what about deviled eggs ?  That paprika-sprinkled, mayo-laden staple of family picnics. It's immediately obvious that these aren't your standard deviled eggs: perfectly shaped whites, overstuffed with piped golden-yellow filling to the point of ridiculousness. A drizzle of bright olive oil pools around them, and on top they're loaded with sliced chives and red-pepper flakes, and a definite hit of mustard.

[ES] The Spotted Pig es el primer gastropub neoyorquino, abierto en Febrero de 2004 por April Bloomsfield y su socio en el negocio, Ken Friedman. El establecimiento consiguió en 2005 su primera y única estrella de la Guía Michelín.

Una hamburguesa es su especialidad, y se ha hecho famosa en Nueva York por que April Bloomsfield, la chef del establecimiento, no permite que sus ingredientes sean modificados. Carne a la parrilla, sobre un bollo brioche y cubierto con queso roquefort desmenuzado. Así es, y si no te gusta, no la pidas. De hecho, sólo a Lou Reed, vecino de la zona, se le permite tomarla con cebolla (un camarero se lo permitió una noche cuando la chef no estaba). Por supuesto, la mayonesa está prohibida.

The Spotted Pig es un lugar dónde la gente normal va a sentirse como una estrella, y las estrellas van a sentirse como gente normal. O simplemente, ambas tribus sólo desean disfrutar de una buena hamburguesa. Así, es habitual ver sentado en una mesa a Jay-Z, un enamorado de esta.

Y qué podemos decir de los Deviled Eggs ? Ese plato típico de los días de campo en familia, con pimentón espolvoreado, y mayonesa.

Inmediatamente se hace obvio que estos no son los habituales: perfectamente blancos, y llenos a rebosar de un hilo de oro amarillo. Un chorrito de aceite de oliva brillante a su alrededor, y coronados con finas cebolletas sutilmente cortadas, pimienta roja molida, y un golpe definitivo de mostaza. Una verdadera exquisitez.

That inititive let's people save time, specially business man and women working around this crowded place on business hours. You can make your order from your phone or on the website, and then, pick it up on the restaurant. Also, you can make your own burguer, with your special recipe or taking any tweeted recipe from any other guy.

The tweeted recipes and orders are shown on a big screen inside the restaurant, and also, you can follow the trending topic burguer. Check this twitter acoount @4foodnyc to follow your order and trending topics.

You earn points to spend on the restaurant from every other people who ask for your burguer recipe, a kind of a burguer retweet. Funny!

[ES] Entre Madison Ave. y la 40th St., en el downtown Manhattan, se encuentra el restaurante 4Food, donde la comida se encarga a través de Twitter, un concepto pensado para los que no pueden separarse del móvil ni siquiera para comer.

Esta iniciativa permite ahorrar tiempo a empleados de negocios que trabajan en una de las zonas más concurridas de Nueva York. El pedido se puede realizar desde vía móvil o web, y después pasar a recogerlo (take away). Cada cual puede diseñar su propia hamburguesa con los ingredientes que desee, desde la tradicional carne de vacuno, queso y lechuga,... hasta de torta de arroz prensado, hummus o frutas.

Una vez hecha la combinación, se puede twittear, así otros clientes puedan encargar el mismo menú. De esta forma se van consiguiendo puntos para gastarlos en el propio local.

[EN] Evan Joseph shoots New York City in a helicopter at night working closely with a pilot. Recently came out with a book called New York City at Night where he's put together a collection of both aerial and street-level photos. 

"Skyscrapers, twinkling bridges, neon lights, and yellow cabs streaking down Broadway".

"first three flights yielded not a single publishable frame. It was only through persistent trial and error that I was able to find a unique solution to this technical challenge" (words from his book).

[ES] Evan Joseph ha inmortalizado Nueva York disparando con su cámara desde un helicóptero, en un trabajo codo a codo con el piloto del mismo para obtener una imágenes espectaculares. El propio autor describe como en las tres primeras salidas en el helicóptero no consiguió ni una sola foto, pero que con constancia fue puliendo la técnica hasta conseguir el resultado que puede verse en sus fotos.

Recientemente ha desvelado su libro New York City at Night, uniendo las colecciones de fotos desde el aire con otras a pie de calle, obteniendo un efecto maravilloso; "rascacielos, brillantes puentes, luces de neón, y taxis amarillos recorriendo Broadway".

[EN] Pixelator is an unauthorized on-going video art performance collaboration with the New York City Metropolitan Transit Authority, Clear Channel Communications, and its selected artists.

Since 2003, the MTA has made available for exhibition purposes 80 LED screens located at subway entrances across New York City. Unfortunately, the high cost of exhibiting (an estimated $274,000 per month per screen) prevents most artists from having access to these facilities. While the MTA's effort to create more opportunities for video art exhibition in public spaces is to be commended, selected works remain wholly fixated on commercial goods and media conglomerate events, a short-sighted curatorial choice that regrettably ignores the full potential of these promising exhibition spaces.

In an attempt to broaden the scope of MTA's video art series, Pixelator takes video pieces currently on display and diffuses them into a pleasant array of 45 blinking, color-changing squares. Since the project is an anonymous collaboration, the resulting video is almost entirely unplanned and unanticipated, with the original artists helping to create new works of art without any knowledge of their participation.

[ES] Pixelator es una obra de arte realizada en "colaboración"  en el MTA (Autoridad Encargada de la Gestión de los Transportes de NY), Clear Channel Communications y un grupo de artistas seleccionados. Por supuesto, no hay ninguna colaboración y es uso no autorizado del mobiliario callejero de Nueva York.

Desde 2003, el MTA ha ido colocando pantallas LED de 80 pulgadas en las entradas de las bocas de metro de la ciudad, con fines publicitarios o promocionales. Defasortunadamente para muchos artistas, el elevado coste de contratar una de estas pantallas les hace imposible promocionar su obra en estos espacios públicos.

En un intento de acceder a esta fuente de publicidad, Pixelator ha sido grabado de forma no autorizada haciendo uso de estas pantallas en pro del arte callejero neoyorquino, famoso mundialmente. Para ello, ha colocado un panel de 45 cuadrados sobre las pantallas, generando un efecto pixelado de los videos que están reproduciéndose, con un resultado visual maravilloso.

Miracle Above Manhattan | New York's High Line

Parks in large cities are usually thought of as refuges, as islands  of green amid seas of concrete and steel. When you approach the High  Line in the Chelsea neighborhood on the lower west side of Manhattan,  what you see first is the kind of thing urban parks were created to get  away from—a harsh, heavy, black steel structure supporting an elevated  rail line that once brought freight cars right into factories and  warehouses and that looks, at least from a distance, more like an  abandoned relic than an urban oasis.
  High Line was, in fact, an urban relic, and a crumbling one at that.  In 90s, Chelsea was gentrifying into a neighborhood of galleries, restaurants,  and loft living. High Line has been turned into one of the most innovative and  inviting public spaces in New York City and perhaps the entire country. Walking on the High Line is unlike any other experience in New York. You  float about 25 feet above the ground, at once connected to street life  and far away from it.

Los parques de las grandes ciudades son generalmente concebidos como refugios, como islas verdes en un mar de acero y cemento. HAPPY SAINT PATRICK'S DAY | 2011

[EN] The St. Patrick's Day Parade  is one of New  York City's greatest traditions. On this day, everyone  is Irish! The  annual procession marches up past Fifth Avenue past St.  Patrick's  Cathedral at 50th Street all the way up past the Metropolitan  Museum of  Art at 83rd Street.      
The  first parade in NYC  took place in 1766 when Irishmen from the   Revolutionary War brought the  tradition to our New World. The military  units continued to march each  year until after the War of 1812 when  local Irish fraternal and  beneficial societies began sponsoring it.
In those days, the parade was quite  small, marching from their meeting halls to Old St. Patrick's  Cathedral in Lower Manhattan  on Mott & Prince Streets (which is  still there!). By 1851, the  groups had banded together, nominating a  Grand Marshall and increasing  the size of the parade. This was when the  Irish 69th Regiment (now the  165th Infantry) became the lead marchers  and the Ancient Order of  Hibernians became the official sponsor.
To  this day, the St. Patrick's Day  Parade remains true to its roots by  not allowing floats, automobiles and  other commercial aspects in.  Marching is what you'll see. Great bands,  be they bagpipes or an entire  orchestra, over 150,000 people from all  over the country and the world  march each year.
This is a great parade for all to come  out and experience. Everyone is welcome!

[ES] El desfile del Día de San Patricio es uno de los mayores acontecimientos de Nueva York, una de sus grandes tradiciones. Este día todos nos volvemos un poco irlandeses, siguiendo un desfile que va desde la 50th St hasta la 83th, a través de la 5th Ave llegando hasta las puertas del Museo Metropolitano (The MET).

Haciendo un poco de historia, ya que hemos dicho que es una de las grandes tradiciones neoyorquinas, el primer desfile se realizó en el año 1766, por un grupo de irlandeses que trajeron la tradición al nuevo mundo después de la Guerra de la Independencia. La tropa irlandesa siguió realizando el desfile casi en solitario hasta 1812 en el que la Fraternidad Irlandesa y diversas organizaciones benéficas comenzarón a ayudarlos.

En aquellos días el desfile era bastante más pequeño, marchando hasta la Old St. Patrick's Cathedral en el Lower Manhattan, entre Mott St y Prince St.

En 1851, con la unión de varios grupos, el desfile comenzó a ser multitudinario. Es en este año en el que por primera vez de designo un Grand Marshall. Esto ocurrió cuando el Regimiento Irish 69th (actualmente el 165th de Infantería) comenzó a liderar la marcha y la Ancient Order of  Hibernians apoyó oficialmente el desfile.

[EN] New York's skyline is known all over the world, particulary Manhattan's, Empire State bld, The Chrysler, Brooklyn Bridge, ... But, since Twin Towers in WTC were destroyed back in 2001, Manhattan's skyline is changing.

A gourgeous skyscraper is rising up in Lower East Side near City Park Hall,  designed by famous architect  Frank Gehry. Some other designs you can enjoy in US are: The Walt Disney Concert Hall in Downtown Los Angeles, The Experience Music Project in Seattle, even here in New York: Condé Nast Cafeteria, (Fourth floor of the Condé Nast Publishing Headquarters at Four Times Square).

A glass and titanium tower is coming to New York City, the Beekman Tower. Primarily residential, it also will dedicate 100,000 square feet to a public school, hospital, and underground parking lot. Studios, two or three bedrooms rental from $2600 to $6000.

Beekman Tower, whose address will be 8 Spruce Street (between William and Nassau Streets), will rise 76 stories (850 feet) and reshape the downtown skyline by the time it is completed in 2012.

[ES] El skyline de Nueva York es mundialmente conocido, muy en particular el de Manhattan, con el Empire State, el Chrysler, las ojivas del puente de Brooklyn, etc. Pero, este skyline desde que las torres gemelas fueron destruidas en los atendados del 11/S está cambiando.

En el Lower East Side muy cerca del Financial District, junto al City Hall Park se está construyendo un precioso edificio diseñado por el famoso arquitecto  Frank Gehry. En España podemos disfrutar de la aruitectura de Gehry paseando por el Museo Guggenheim de Bilbao, o las bodegas de Hotel Marqués de Riscal (El ciego, Álava).

En breve, los neoyorquinos podrán disfrutar de un espectacular edificio, Eight Spruce St. Un rascacielos de 265 metros de altura, 76 plantas para el edificio que se bautizará con el nombre de Beekman Tower, cuya construcción se espera que finalice en 2012.

La torre de cristal y titanio contará en su mayor parte con estudios y apartamentos, con precios entre 2600 y 6000 dólares mensuales de alquiler. Además, de un hospital se dedicarán 9300 m2 para un colegio público.

Pigalle is offering special Winter Cheese Festival menus for lunch and dinner, as are Nice Matin, Marseille, Café D'Alsace, French Roast (uptown and downtown), Le Monde, L'Express, and Maison.

The Tour de France Restaurant Group brings the varied and celebrated  cuisines of France to Manhattan, without ever requiring a trip over the  Triborough Bridge. The nineth restaurants each transport diners to a  different region, inviting them to experience the atmosphere and flavors  of France right here in New York City.

Written and Directed by Paul Rojanathara and Davis Johnson, the film is a Polaroid snapshot of New York influential creatives (advertising, design, fashion and entertainment) who are shaping today's pop culture.

"Influencers" belongs to the new generation of short films, webdocs, which combine the documentary style and the online experience.

New York City Taverns (the oldest)

[EN] The following taverns are must do in New York: The White Horse Taver, McSorley's, Old Town Bar, Pete's Tavern and Ear inn.

The White Horse Tavern located at Hudson St and 11th Ave is known as a bohemian culture spot in New York back in the 50s and 60s, when many writers and artits moved around Greenwich Village, people like Dylan Thomas were spotted drunk many times, also Jim Morrison and Bob Dylan. The bar opened in 1880.

McSorley's  is the oldest Irish tavern in New York City, located at 15 E. 7th St.  in the East Village. It was one of the last of the "Men Only" pubs, only  welcoming women after legally being forced to do so in 1970. McSorley's has long claimed that it opened its doors in 1854, however  historical research has shown that this is not possible. Researcher  Richard McDermott has determined that the site was a vacant lot in 1861.

Many notable people have visited McSorley's, including Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt. Literary figures like Paul Blackburn, LeRoi Jones and Gilbert Sorrentino have been cited as regulars.

The Old Town Bar and restaurant located between Park and Broadway on 18th Street in continuous operation since 1892. Most of the furnishings and decor are original, including New York's  oldest dumbwaiter that ferries food orders from the upstairs kitchen  down to the bar.

Several artists and Hollywood directors have used the Old Town as a backdrop for their productions and movie scenes.

Pete's Tavern claims to be the oldest continuously operating tavern in New York City, and is located at 129 East 18th Street near Gramercy Park. It has been operating as a bar since 1864. During prohibition, when selling alcohol was illegal, Pete's continued to operate disguised as a flower shop.

It has been often featured on TV appearing on Seinfeld, Law and Order or Sex and the City, and O. Henry wrote the classic Gift of The Magi here at his favorite booth by the front doors, in 1902.

The Ear Inn is one of the oldest existing taverns in New York City, located at James Brown House, a historic building in the Lower Manhattan (Spring Street btw. Greenwich and Washington) since 1870.

Ear Inn is a serious contender for oldest bar in New York. In  superchic SoHo, this pub is a welcome cranky relief. They pull an  excellent draft of Guinness and respect the no-cellphone policy or suffer the consequences.

[EN] San Matteo is in two words, authentic pizza. The pizza is baked fresh using quality ingredients. The place is so  fresh the bread for the sandwiches is baked to order and they are great. (Olive Oil, Balsamic, ...)

San Matteo is small and hasn't any place to wait for a table, but a reasonable price (the average pizza price is $15) and the food is defiantly worth a wait.

If you're hanging out with friends near Upper East Side, you should try get a table, but remember, a group not larger than 4 people is just a recommendation.

Margherita and Diavolo pizza are great and worth any dime you spend there, also you should taste the famous panuozzo, a sort of a sandwich that's constructed like pizza turned inside out. It tastes amazing. Our recomendation is roast pork panuozzo.

[ES] San Matteo es en dos palabras, pizza auténtica. Usando horno de leña y por supuesto, los mejores ingredientes frescos. Además, los bocadillos son realmente buenos, un sitio en el que encontrarás aceite de oliva y balsámico.

San Matteo es un lugar pequeño, sin sitio para esperar para una mesa, pero con unos precios razonables y unas pizzas exquisitas, merece la pena esperar a sentarse o pedir para llevar.

Si estas por el Upper East Side con los amigos, deberías intentar comer aquí, eso si, con un grupo no mayor de 4 personas, o será casi imposible coger mesa para sentarse.

Las pizzas Margherita o Diavolo son muy buenas y merecen la pena cada dólar que gastes en ellas. Además, de las pizzas, deberás probar los famosos panuozzo, una especie de sandwich hecho con masa de pizza, pero al revés, de dentro a fuera. Está exquisito, y recomendamos el Roast Pork Panuozzo.

En resumen, hay que probarlo !

¿ What's that ?
The Empire State Building Run-Up is a foot race from ground level to the 86th-floor observation deck that has been held annually since 1978. Its participants are referred to both as runners and as climbers, and are often tower running enthusiasts. The race covers a vertical distance of 1,050 feet (320 m) and takes in 1,576 steps. The record time is 9 minutes and 33 seconds, achieved by Australian professional cyclist Paul Crake in 2003, at a climbing rate of 6,593 ft (2,010 m) per hour.

Note:  this is an invitational race, with selections based on athletic ability and background.

¿Qué es?
La Empire State Building (ESB) Run Up o Ascenso al ESB, es una carrera a pie por las escaleras del famoso rascacielos neoyorquino, que se viene realizando desde 1978. Los participantes suelen referirse a ellos mismos como corredores o escaladores, y suelen ser grandes entusiastas de esta "disciplina deportiva".

La carrera recorre los 86 pisos del ESB, desde la planta baja hasta el observatorio, en una distancia vertical de 320 metros y 1576 escalones.

El record sigue en poder del ciclista Paul Crake, en 2003, con un crono de 9 minutos y 33 segundos. Esto equivale a un ascenso de 2010 metros por hora. Increible !.

[EN] Boston was first city openning a Converse  retail store, on Newbury Street, but the sneaker giant unveiled its largest specialty store in New York’s SoHo neighborhood. The new 7,000 sq-ft. space at Prince Street and Broadway, boast the largest selection of Converse kicks under one roof, anywhere across the globe.

The store won’t be easy to miss. Keep an eye open for the 13-by-35 ft.  American flag in the storefront, assembled from 648 pairs of red, white,  and blue Chuck Taylor All-Star Converses.

Sneakerheads can officially designate this as their one-stop shop to track down any existing Converse line, including the staple Chuck Taylor All-Stars, Star Chevron, One Star, Jack Purcell or Converse by John Varvatos.

Of course, as you should expect from the largest Converse store in the world, there is a special sneaker customization lab in the back.

The flagship store also introduced a new line of limited-edition graphic T-shirts and sneakers, bearing some necessary New York City geography. Each borough and a few select neighborhoods -Williamsburg, Coney Island, SoHo and Harlem ... - will be branded on kicks and apparel, and will be available only at the SoHo outpost.

[EN] No Pants Subway Ride is an annual event organized by ImprovEverywhere.com  as one of their missions.

About them: ImprovEverywhere causes scenes of chaos and joy in public places.  Created in August of 2001 by Charlie Todd, ImprovEverywhere has executed over 100 missions involving tens of thousands of undercover agents.  The group is based in New York City.

All are invited to participate in the 10th Annual No Pants Subway Ride. The event will take place at 3:00 PM on Sunday, January 9.

REQUIREMENTS FOR PARTICIPATION:

1) Willing to take pants off on subway

2) Able to keep a straight face about it

St. Patrick's Old Cathedral Becomes Basilica

[EN] The corner stone of Old St. Patrick's - the city's first Cathedral Church - was laid on June 8,1809. It was dedicated on May 14,1815 and became Basilica on December 5, 2010.

Designed by architect Joseph Francois Mangin, St. Patrick's has great dignity and character in its restrained simplicity. Near the west wall stands the huge marble altar surrounded by an ornately carved, gold leaf reredos.

St. Patrick's Old Cathedral is located in "The Heart of Old New York" in  the rapidly changing neighborhoods of Little Italy, Chinatown, and  SOHO. Today's parish is very strong and regularly celebrates liturgies  in English, Spanish as well as Chinese at Most Holy Crucifix. St.  Patrick's Old Cathedral has served this community for almost 200 years  and looks forward to serving it for as many to come.

In 1966, St. Patrick's Old Cathedral was one of the first sites to be named a New York City landmark by the New York City Landmarks Commission.  St. Patrick's, St. Patrick's Old Cathedral School and St. Michael's are  also listed on the National Registry of Historic Landmarks.

The Baptism scene in The Godfather was filmed here, as was the scene in The Godfather, Part III in which Michael Corleone receives an honor from the church. A scene in Mean Streets was set in the cathedral's walled graveyard.

[ES] La primera piedra de la antigua Catedral de San Patricio (St. Patrick's Old Cathedral), la primera catedral de la ciudad, se colocó el 8 de Junio de 1809 y no fue consagrada hasta el 14 de Mayo de 1815. Ha sido nombrada Basílica el 5 de Diciembre de 2010.

Diseñada por el arquitecto Joseph Francoise Mangin, St. Patrick's Old Cathedral mantiene una gran dignidad como iglesia, con carácter, a pesar de su simplicidad exterior. Junto al muro orientado al Oeste se encuentra un enorme altar rodeado de preciosas tallas y retablos de pan de oro.

La antigua Catedral de San Patricio se encuentra situada en "el corazón del viejo Nueva York" en los cambiantes vecindarios de Little Italy, Chinatown y el archi-famoso SoHo.  Actualmente, la asistencia a la parroquia es muy alta, con liturgias en inglés y castellano, además de chino. La iglesia ha servido a la comunidad neoyorquina por casi 200 años y espera seguir haciéndolo por muchos más.

En 1966, se convirtió en uno de los primeros edificios en convertirse en Lugar Histórico de Nueva York, reconocido por la comisión dedicada a tal efecto. Además de la ella, la actual Catedral de San Patricio y la Iglesia de San Miguel pertenecen al Registro Nacional de Lugares Históricos de Estados Unidos de América.

Como dato anecdótico, aparece en la película El Padrino, la escena del bautizo se realizó en ella. Además, en El Padrino III, Michael Corleone recibe los honores de la iglesia. En otra escena, aparecen las paredes del cementerio de Mean Street.

This is a film he made after some adventures underground with Steve Duncan last summer (2010).

[EN] On the early hours of December 25th, inside Christmas Day, the street artist Agata Olek thought the famous Wall Street Charging Bull will get cold, because the blizzard. So, she knitted a dress for the bull. Here is the video of the dressing.

A guerrilla act made on another unlawful act, because the Charging Bull was an illegal tribute from Arturo Di Modica to the city of New York. Arturo placed his work there on Christmas Day of 1987 without any license.

[ES] Durante la madrugada del día 24 de Diciembre (día de navidad ya) la artista callejera Agata Olek pensó que el famoso toro de Wall Street podía pasar frío, por la increíble tormenta que se avecinaba. No se le ocurrió otra cosa que tejerle un bonito vestido de punto. Os traemos el video del "making off" de como vistió a la bestia.

Muy divertido y curioso fué el hecho, que es ilegal, aunque tambié fué ilegal la instalación (en la navidad de 1987) del famoso toro en su momento (obra del escultor Arturo Di Modica),  mantenido en su actual sitio por la presión popular ejercida sobre las autoridades que lo retiraron.

	P. J. Clarke's (Restaurant) Movie: The Lost Weekend Don Birnam (Ray Milland), a would-be writer, is a long time alcoholic who is dissatisfied with his life. 	Grand Central Terminal (Building) Movie: The Fisher King Terry Gilliam directed this adaptation of Richard LaGravenese's mystical (and mythical) tale of redemption in the hard-time town of New York City. Jeff Bridges is shock radio DJ Jack Lucas, whose low opinion of humanity lends itself well to his radio talk show, where the enmity rubs off on his listeners. One fan in particular takes Jack's rants to heart and goes to a fancy restaurant with a gun, murdering innocent diners. Jack is so distraught at what his on-air suggestion wrought that he sinks into a three-year depression, drinking himself to sleep and mooching off of his girlfriend Anne Napolitano (Mercedes Ruehl, in an Oscar-winning performance), an attractive owner of a video store. Hitting bottom, Jack slumps to the river, prepared to commit suicide. To his rescue comes a crazed but witty homeless man named Parry (Robin Williams), who tells Jack he's destined for great things -- all his has to do is find the Holy Grail (conveniently located in mid-town Manhattan) and save Parry's soul. 	The Actor's Studio (Building) Movie: Fame At the New York City High School for the Performing Arts, students get specialized training that often leads to success as actors, singers, etc. This movie follows four students from the time when they audition to get into the school, through graduation. They are the brazen Coco Hernandez, shy Doris Finsecker, sensitive gay Montgomery MacNeil, and brash, abrasive Raul Garcia.
	Dakota Apartment Building Movie: Rosemary's Baby Actor Guy Woodhouse and his wife Rosemary move into a new apartment. In no time they befriend their neighbours, the aging Castevets. Rosemary soon becomes pregnant. But when her obstetrician prescribes herbal medicines, which the Castevets provide, Rosemary becomes increasingly sicker. She becomes suspicious of the strange coincidences that start to occur around her and comes to believe that the Castevets, her obstetrician and even Guy are a conspiring coven of Satanists and that the child she is carrying may have been fathered by the Devil.
	Metro Lexington Ave & E 52nd St (Metro Station) Movie: The Seven Year Itch In summertime in Manhattan, the plain and average Richard Sherman (Tom Ewell) sends his wife and son for vacation in the country. Sherman is the key man of a publishing firm, Brady & Company, which publishes cheap pocket books. The faithful Sherman has a routine life with his family and dreams on being successful with women. When a beautiful and sexy blonde (Marilyn Monroe) lodges the upstairs apartment of his small building, Sherman first opens the front door for her and then he invites her to have a drink with him after the fall of her tomato vase on his chair...
	Hotel 17 New York (Building) Movie: Manhattan Murder Mistery Carol Lipton (Diane Keaton) suspects that her aged neighbour Paul House (Jerry Adler) has murdered his wife, found dead seemingly due to a heart attack. Her husband Larry (Woody Allen), thinks she’s paranoid and tries to get the idea out of her head; but Carol is determined to find out more about her neighbour and decides to follow him with the help of Ted (Alan Alda), a friend of the couple who’s always fancied her.
	Park Slope (Park) Movie: Smoke (Wayne Wang) In 1990, novelist Paul Auster was asked to contribute a Christmas story to the New York Times. The resulting piece, "Auggie Wren’s Christmas Story," forms the basis for his screenplay for SMOKE. Directed by Wayne Wang and set in a Brooklyn cigar store, Auster expanded the story to include four other characters whose lives intertwine with Auggie Wren’s. As Auggie, the manager of the store that serves as a neighborhood meeting place, Harvey Keitel gives a restrained, mellow performance. The other characters, Paul (William Hurt), a blocked writer; Rashid (Harold Perrineau Jr.), a troubled youth; Ruby (Stockard Channing), Auggie’s former lover; and Cyrus (Forest Whitaker), Rashid’s long-lost father, form a web of relationships over a few summer days. Auster, who had previously adapted his novel THE MUSIC OF CHANCE into a taut script, here exhibits a loose, almost improvisational style as he lets his characters simply talk about their lives. Wang eschews the big, somewhat melodramatic style he used in THE JOY LUCK CLUB for relaxed, natural direction that allows the actors, who are all terrific, to project an everyday realism seldom seen in American movies. The actual Christmas story appears at the end in a beautiful black-and-white montage, accompanied by a bittersweet Tom Waits song.
	USS Intrepid Movie: I Am Legend Year 2012. Robert Neville is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable...and manmade. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City...and maybe the world. But he is not alone. He is surrounded by "the infected"--victims of the plague who have mutated into carnivorous beings that can only exist in the dark and that will devour or infect anyone or anything in their path. For three years, Neville has spent his days scavenging for food and supplies and faithfully sending out radio messages, desperate to find any other survivors who might be out there. All the while, the infected lurk in the shadows, watching Neville's every move, waiting for him to make a fatal mistake.
